STEMMING Green Innovation
Agentic AI and quantum-secure STEM talent for a smart, solar Europe.
STEMMING is a 24-month EIT Higher Education Initiative project coordinated by the University of L’Aquila. It is designed to strengthen higher-education capacity in green, digital and deep-tech innovation from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2028.
The change STEMMING is designed to make
From strong STEM knowledge to responsible deep-tech action.
Europe’s STEM programmes produce strong scientific and engineering foundations, but learners and staff do not always have scalable, assessed routes into innovation, entrepreneurship, IP, standards-aware engineering and research-to-market practice. STEMMING addresses that gap in the strategic context of smart solar, AI-enabled energy systems and trusted digital infrastructure.
The project does not replace degree programmes. It builds a shared Green Digital STEM Entrepreneurship Framework, eight non-degree mini-credentials, reusable challenge assets and institutional services that can complement existing teaching and staff development.

The operating model
Four connected components
Education, digital infrastructure, real-world challenges and venture pathways are designed as one institutional-change system rather than separate communication themes.
Shared training architecture
Four pillars and eight mini-credentials
Assessment-backed learning across Agentic AI, Smart Green & Solar, Quantum Trust & Security, and Venture & Entrepreneurship, supporting at least 21 local module instances.
Green STEM Educational Agent Lab
AI-assisted, human-supervised support
Curriculum-aware tutors, venture coaching, helpdesk ticketing, expert escalation, privacy-preserving deployment patterns and auditable governance.
Solar and Smart Energy Digital Twin Studios
Realistic engineering and innovation environments
Smart-PV, energy, photonics, AI and quantum-secure scenarios using open, synthetic or controlled datasets and industry-informed challenge briefs.
Venture, employability and transfer
Learning connected to responsible next steps
IP clinics, KTO/TTO strengthening, internships, customer discovery, venture sprints, investor readiness and pathways into relevant ecosystem support.
Project commitments
Ambitious targets across the consortium.
These are consortium-wide project targets over the funded period, not entitlements promised to every visitor or participant.
successful training participants
Approximately 7,000 students, 500 academic staff and 500 non-academic staff, each completing at least 10 learning hours with assessment.
mentoring journeys
AI-assisted and human-reviewed learning, career or venture support journeys under the project model.
internships
Placements linked to project challenges and mini-credential pathways, subject to separate availability and selection.
teams supported / start-ups established
At least seven start-up or scale-up teams supported for two months or more, with a target of three established start-ups.
new or improved structures
Including a durable diversity-and-inclusion mechanism, Agent Lab, Twin Studios, venture support and governance structures.
new partnerships
Cross-border industry, standards, regional-authority and ecosystem relationships linked to delivery and scale-out.
Implementation
Seven work packages over four phases.
Design and set-up lead into pilots, scale and venture building, then institutionalisation and handover. Public cohort pages are updated as delivery dates, eligibility and participation routes are confirmed.
Project steering, risk management, quality assurance, monitoring, evaluation and learning across the consortium.
Design of the common competence framework, learning outcomes and the eight shared mini-credential profiles.
AI-assisted support services, controlled guidance workflows and the processes that underpin quality-assured credential issuing.
Scenario-based engineering and challenge environments for smart energy, solar, photonics and data-driven experimentation.
Market-validation, employability and innovation-transfer pathways including internships and knowledge-transfer support.
Inclusion measures, community access routes and regional adoption structures that broaden participation.
Communication, replication, community-building and exploitation activities that help the offer scale beyond pilots.
Quality and recognition
Quality-aligned credentials with transparent recognition.
Learning outcomes are designed to map to relevant European competence and standards frameworks. STEMMING prepares quality dossiers and assessment procedures aligned with EIT expectations. Every cohort will state the actual issuer, recognition route, workload, participation conditions and any fee before applications open.
The STEMMING knowledge triangle
Education, research, networks and industry in one consortium
Four beneficiary HEIs lead institutional change, supported by specialist organisations and companies in solar, certification, inclusion, infrastructure, venture building and quantum security. Three associated HEIs extend adoption and replication.
